Outreach: SENCER Center for Innovation - West
Santa Clara University is the host institution for SCI-West, in collaboration with Saint Mary's College of California. Santa Clara University is a Jesuit University in Silicon Valley with a 155-year tradition of educating the whole person for a life of service and leadership. SCU is California's oldest operating institution of higher education, and was founded on the site of Mission Santa Clara de Asis, the eighth of the original twenty-one California missions. It is home to 4600 undergraduate students and over 3500 graduate students. Areas of Expertise and Focus SCI-West initiatives are open to participants around the U.S. but are primarily designed to address the needs and interests of individuals in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The SCI-West group has broad expertise among its members, but has a particular interest in sustainability on- and off-campus and undergraduate research. Recent Events Science and Civic Engagement: A Symposium on New Approaches in Science and Mathematics Education with a Special Emphasis on Water Science and Policy February 26-27, 2010, hosted by Woodbury University in Burbank, CA The SENCER Center for Innovation-West and the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies at Woodbury University will host Science and Civic Engagement: A Symposium on New Approaches in Science and Mathematics Education with a Special Emphasis on Water Science and Policy. Highlights include sessions on Transdisciplinarity, Physics and Civic Engagement, Undergraduate Research as Civic Engagement, Rethinking Water in the Arid West, Engagement in the Life Sciences and Mathematics, Course Design and the Use of SENCER SALG in Assessment, as well as a transdisciplinary panel discussion on “How Water Science Influences Water Policy.” Poster presentations on curricula and courses, community partnerships, and research on “Water and the West” are invited (all disciplines are welcome).
