Outreach: SENCER Center for Innovation - South

SCI-South and the Host Institution

The University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) is the host institution for SCI-South.  UNCA is North Carolina's only public liberal arts institution, and embraces creative expression, the centrality of learning, rigorous undergraduate scholarship, exemplary teaching, and an informed commitment to serving the community.

In addition to offering SENCER courses for both science and non-science majors, UNCA applies the SENCER philosophy to its Integrative Liberal Studies (ILS) Topical Clusters.  Each UNCA student is required to complete three courses (natural science, social science, and an elective) from a list of courses focused on an important societal topic.

Areas of Expertise and Focus

SCI-South initiatives are open to participants around the U.S. but are primarily designed to address the needs and interests of individuals in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The SCI-South group has broad expertise among its members, but has a particular interest in the environment, conservation biology, undergraduate research, SENCER and science major courses, pre-med curricula, exportable course modules, international collaborations, large curricular revisions, and assessment.

Upcoming Events

SCI-South Winter Symposium

January 9-10, 2009

Hosted by the University of North Carolina at Asheville

The SENCER Center for Innovation (SCI) - South will host a winter symposium and workshop on the University of North Carolina Asheville campus.  The meeting will provide a venue for current SENCER community members to present their work and reconnect with colleagues and will give an opportunity for newly interested faculty, administrators, students, and others to learn about how people are applying the SENCER approach and how they might be able to use the approach to improve student learning.

The symposium program will include oral presentation and poster presentation opportunities, as well as sessions specifically directed to attendees looking to learn more about SENCER.  The schedule will likely include a session focused on work done at two-year colleges and how possible partnerships might evolve.

More information on how to register and how to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations will be posted to this page.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact Keith Krumpe, SCI-South co-director, at kkrumpe@unca.edu or at (828) 251-6957.
