SSI 2008: Registration Main
Institute Participant RegistrationParticipants invited to attend SSI 2008 will be able to submit registration online beginning April 4, 2008. Registration must be completed by June 23, 2008.
Please read the following information carefully before submitting your registration. Details on payment, lodging, transportation, meals, workshops, individual/team participation, and cancellations/substitutions are included on this page. A Special Note to Team Participants: If you will be attending SSI 2008 as a part of a team, please be sure to coordinate registration with your team leader and other team members. The team leader is responsible for ensuring that his/her entire team has registered. If you are filling out the registration form for a fellow team member, please double-check all information for accuracy (e.g. title, correct spelling of names, etc.) as this will be used for printed program materials. Institute Overview SSI 2008 will take place from August 8-11, with Pre-Institute Workshops on August 7 (1-5 p.m.), and Post-Institute Workshops on August 11 (1-5 p.m.). Most Institute activities will take place at Santa Clara University, the host institution for SSI 2008. Pre- and Post-Workshops will be held at the Fairmont San Jose, the hotel where we have arranged a block of rooms at a reduced rate for SSI 2008 attendees. Please note that we will make your hotel reservations based on information you include in your registration. I. Travel Participants should make their own travel arrangements to San Jose, CA. The Institute will begin on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m. with on-site registration (to pick up SSI 2008 printed materials and last-minute information), so we advise participants to arrive on Thursday, August 7th. The Institute will conclude at 12:00 pm on Monday, August 11th. II. Lodging SENCER has reserved a block of rooms at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose for SSI participants. We will arrange hotel accommodations for participants for the nights of August 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th. The conference rate is $135.00 per single room, or $67.50 per double-occupancy room. Your accommodation fee of $750.00 includes half of a double-occupancy room for the nights of August 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th. Participants are welcome to upgrade to a single room for an additional $67.50 per night. You may also extend your stay at the conference rate of $135 per night for a single room or $67.50 per night for a room with a roommate (subject to availability at the hotels). Requests for single room upgrades and extended stays will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability. You will also have an opportunity to select a roommate on the registration form. If you do not request a specific roommate but would like to stay in a double-occupancy room, we will do our best to match you with another SSI participant. Please note: SENCER will make your hotel reservations for you based on requests made on your registration form. You should not call the Fairmont to make your reservations or changes to your reservation. Please contact the SENCER DC office if you need to make changes once you have completed your online registration. III. Meals Breakfast, coffee breaks, and lunch will be provided each full day of the meeting, as well as dinner on Friday, August 8th and a light reception on Saturday, August 9th.
IV. Transportation During SSI 2008 SENCER will provide buses to the Santa Clara University campus from the Fairmont hotel each day of the conference. Buses will run for several hours at the beginning of the day and at the end of the scheduled activities. Timetables will be listed in the SSI 2008 program, to be published closer to the Institute. We regret that we cannot provide transportation to and from airports. Please reference the “Getting Around San Jose” document on the SSI 2008 page of this website (link). V. Pre- and Post-Institute Workshops Enrollment in a Pre- or Post-Institute workshop is open to all invited participants, and participants may select a pre- and/or post-Institute workshop during online registration. Pre-Institute Workshops: Thursday, August 7th from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted 1. SENCER: An Introduction 2. Critical Thinking 3. Writing in SENCER Courses 4. Thinking at the Community Level: Integrating Public Health Perspectives and Global Health Connections into SENCER Courses 5. The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Wednesday, August 6th (4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m.) – Thursday, August 7th (9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.) * By invitation only, please complete an online application. 6. W(h)ither Introductory STEM Courses in the 21st Century: Thursday, August 7th from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. * By invitation only, please complete an online application. *Pre-Institute workshops on the scholarship of teaching and learning and on introductory courses are the only sessions that require an application. Post-Institute Workshops: Monday, August 11th from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted 1. Designing, Implementing, and Assessing Comprehensive Student Learning Outcomes 2. Designing a SENCER Course (an additional, optional session is planned for Tuesday, August 12th from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) 3. Implementing Formative Assessments All workshops will be held at the Fairmont San Jose. VI. Payment Each participant is responsible for a $750.00 fee that includes:
Payment is due to the SENCER office in Washington, DC by June 30, 2008. You may pay your fee by check or credit card. We will email you a receipt upon payment. VII. Cancellations and Substitutions Substitutions for team members originally included in your application to attend the Institute may be made at any time. You must notify the SENCER office who the new team member is and who will not attend the Institute, especially if hotel reservations have already been made. Cancellations may be made with full or partial refunds of the accommodation fee based on the date of cancellation. We regret that as the Institute approaches, we will not be able to make 100% refunds. If you need to cancel your attendance at SSI 2008, please call the DC office at (202) 483-4600 as soon as possible.
If you cancel close to the Institute, you may not know the status of a possible refund until two weeks following the close of the Institute. SENCER staff will be in San Jose prior and following the Institute, and will investigate your request as soon as possible. VIII. Please note that if you are a team leader, you are responsible for ensuring that each of your team members completes this form.
Staff Registration*ONLY for SSI 2008 on-site staff, keynote and plenary speakers, senior fellows/senior associates. Do not use this section if you were invited to participate after submitting an application as an individual participant or a team member. Travel: Staff and Institute faculty should make their own travel arrangements to San Jose, CA. Please plan to arrive in Portland in time for a staff meeting on Thursday, August 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel. More specific information will be emailed to you. We will arrange hotel accommodations based on your registration. We will do our best to honor single room upgrade requests, but will be limited based on the numbers of single and double-occupancy rooms available at each hotel. You will also have an opportunity to select a roommate on the registration form. |
