About SENCER: Testimonials
Over the past few years, we have collected statements from educators, academic leaders, students, and experts in related
fields on the effectiveness of the SENCER approach in improving science literacy, student confidence, and student interest
in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) fields. Academic leaders have also spoken out on the value of
SENCER symposia, especially the Summer Institutes, our intensive, residential faculty development experiences. You will find a collection of these quotes, below.
- I believe deeply that our global society needs SENCER. We must ensure that our future leaders, scientists and non-scientists alike, appreciate the complexities of
society's problems and work together to seek solutions to them.
- Ellen Goldey, Wofford College
- If one considers that the purpose of education is to develop an informed populace capable of utilizing all kinds of knowledge for both personal and the common good,
SENCER presents a way of achieving such an objective by elucidating the connections between science and other disciplines.
- Patricia Wilson, La Salle University
- SENCER is the nation's most important educational reform initiative in the areas of general and higher education. SENCER is addressing our country's critical need
for science education for the non-major, in ways that address the intersections of scientific concepts, the STEM disciplines, and their social impact.
- Edward Katz, University of North Carolina, Asheville
- You're never done learning, as an educator. Each year I come out [to the SSI] and I go to different workshops when I'm not presenting my own. I always learn something
new: a new technique, or way of structuring a course. It keeps me fresh, and keeps me doing things differently each year. So my students don't get bored. SENCER really
helps to open the minds of people and for those of us who keep coming back, you always learn something new.
- Lynn Leavitt, George Mason University
- All the professors I have ever had could gain from exposure to the SENCER experience. It is also important to reel in the administrators because they are the ones
that have the power to see big changes through.
- Student participant
- [The SENCER Summer Institute] introduced me to new ideas about teaching that I was unaware of. I learned about strategies being used at other institutions and I
met a number of interesting individuals who could become potential collaborators for future eduction-related research.
- Terry Brown, University of Wisconsin-River Falls
- SENCER has captured the imagination of professors and administrators as they have looked for ways to improve the quality of science education for non-science majors
at the colleges and universities. SENCER has effectively developed models that have provided templates that assist professors in bringing new ideas into their classrooms.
- Marion Field Fass, Beloit College
