About SENCER Leadership Fellow Cynthia Klevickis

Starting in 2001, Cindy Klevickis and colleagues at JMU developed a comprehensive approach to implement SENCER principles in a suite of courses taken by every pre-service elementary, middle school and special education teacher education student at JMU.  So far, more than 1400 students have completed this curriculum.  The results are dramatic and worthy of attention by others concerned with increasing the numbers and quality of teachers prepared to teach science effectively. A tireless, imaginative, and intellectually-serious innovator, Cindy is also a great promoter of student empowerment.  She takes students seriously and students respond with remarkable achievements.

As a SENCER Leadership Fellow, Cindy will be focusing attention on designing strategies to encourage students to take science courses early in their academic careers and she will bring the cohort-based interventions she has designed to the attention of the wider STEM reform community through publications and dissemination at regional and national gatherings

Cindy was elected to the inaugural class of Leadership Fellows in July 2008.
