About SENCER Leadership Fellow Heide Hlawaty
Heide Hlawaty and her colleague Richard Grallo have been leaders in employing the SENCER ideals to the development of new liberal arts courses at MCNY focused on matters of significance to New York City and the nation. In particular, Professor Grallo has worked to develop strategies to use real-time, relevant civic questions to teach statistics and mathematics and Dr. Hlawaty has engaged her students with the challenges of public health to improve learning in the basic sciences. As SENCER Leadership Fellows, Heide and Richard will be working to revise an MCNY earth science course along SENCER lines, expand SENCER projects in the area of graduate teacher education programs, and participate in regional activities, especially in the New York metropolitan area. Heide was elected to the inaugural class of Leadership Fellows in July 2008.
