About SENCER Leadership Fellow Timothy Elgren

Timothy Elgren initiated and coordinated the involvement of a team from Hamilton in the 2002 SENCER Summer Institute.  The team created a course called Scientific and Social Perspectives on HIV/AIDS.   Tim has always belied that the greatest impact he has had as a teacher of chemistry is when he made the topics to be learned relevant to the lives of his students.   To stimulate this impact, he has implemented a public policy exercise into the general education laboratory course he teaches.

As a SENCER Leadership Fellow, Tim wants to expand his SENCER connected work by creating a stand-alone laboratory course at the intersection of chemistry, biology and earth science focused on environmental analysis.  If this project is successful, Tim hopes to propose it as a national model.  He also plans to forge new collaborations at Hamilton and with colleagues around the country who share similar goals for improving science learning and connecting that learning to important civic questions.

Tim was elected to the inaugural class of Leadership Fellows in July 2008.
