James Daly and his colleague Jan Factor employed insights gained from their association with SENCER to create the Science and the Modern World program at Purchase College.  Teaching basic science through some of the great civic and societal issues—as well as scientific challenges—is at the heart of this new curricular reform effort, one that is now enrolling some 450 students in nine sections.  Large, campus-wide reforms are of special interest to the SENCER national project, now that several institutions, including Purchase College, have piloted them, with generally very good results.  Hence, we look forward to applying what Jan and Jim have learned about broad-scale implementation to other campuses.

As a SENCER Leadership Fellows, Jan and Jim will participate in regional activities, offer consultations to others on design and implementation, coordinating Purchase’s assessment efforts with others with similar interests, and preparing materials on the Purchase College project for publication and potential use by other members of the SENCER community and those committed to improving STEM learning.

Jim was elected to the inaugural class of Leadership Fellows in July 2008.
